Big news for the transport and logistics industry!
Spain has officially approved the Sustainable Mobility Law, making it the first country in Europe to require digital freight documents for transport controls. This milestone decision means that electronic control documents for national transports will become mandatory within 10 months after the law’s publication in the Spanish Official State Gazette.
“The mandatory nature of this control document could encourage the adoption of other electronic documents, such as the eCMR,” – says Ramón Valdivia Palma, Executive Vice President of ASTIC.
Why is this important?
This is more than a regulatory change - it’s a major milestone for the industry, encouraging also other countries to follow. This is also a clear step towards making road transport more sustainable, future-proof, and collaborative.
It’s a sign that digitalisation is no longer optional. It’s happening now, and the countdown has started. Companies that act early will gain a competitive edge in compliance, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Going digital will also ease the cross-border collaboration not only with Spanish companies but also partners from countries that have a higher level of eCMR and digital documentation adoption, creating a truly efficient and collaborative environment.
What’s next for shippers and carriers?
The question is no longer “if” you should digitalise. It’s: how fast can you do it - and whether the solution you choose is secure, compliant, and easy to implement.
